Well, I made it through my three nights. I have to say I have had better nights. They were kind of sucky. I am glad they are over and can only hope the next week will be better.

I am listening to the I am Sam soundtrack right now. It's very cool... I mean, how could it not be cool? I really liked that movie. I thought it was very sweet and very touching.

So, I gotta sleep a little, then I have to go help my cousin pick out some clothes to buy for an interview he has next week. Then, I think I will make Shane take me out on a date and then later, I am gonna make him be my love slave.

I am all about this

January 27, 2003

Well, today is my last day of freedom. Back to work tomorrow night. We will have second semester students with us the first half of the night from the community college. It is kind of nice, because it makes the night go faster. It also can be kind of lame, because they need so much direction and things take a lot longer to get done. It takes them at least three times as long as it takes me to do stuff. But, you know what? It's okay. They are learning and I really don't mind. I try to be encouraging and helpful and patient. They are kind of funny because they are so stressed out and ask so many questions and are so eager to do the weirdest things. They almost pee their pants when you ask them if they want to go hang a new IV bag with you. Just to watch you do it. And they ask a million questions as you do it. I can remember being just like them not too long ago. And I think it's cool that I can help them out and let them know that I made it and that they can make it too. Yes, soon you too will be able to spike an IV bag with speed and efficiency.

There are two things you should check out:

The first thing is our new photoblog. Shane is putting it all together and it looks very nice. There are pictures from our trip to Hearst Castle and a hike up Bishop's Peak there so far. You should go check it out. It has been a lot of work for him and it looks really sweet.

The other thing you should check out is my friend Amy's new blog about her crazy adventures down in Mexico at www.amyfuller.net It's just in the beginning stages, but it's very cool and will get much cooler.

I finished reading North and South today. I remember back in the day when they made the mini-series with Patrick Swayze in it and my mom and I watched them together. I think that might have been the beginning for Mr. Swayze. Kirstie Alley was in it too. She was evil and I have to say I really haven't cared for her since then. Gosh those Pier 1 commercials are almost as annoying as that Veronica's Closet show.

So, I received North and South for Christmas. I really liked it. I am coming to find that I enjoy history. I don't know why I didn't pay more attention in school. I know North and South is a novel and all, but it is somewhat historical. I went today and got the next two books in the series and About a Boy with my gift certificate to Barnes & Nobel. I was kind of bummed that they only had the book with the picture of Hugh Grant and the kid in the movie on it, but I got is anyway.

Books I have read so far this year:

MASH by Richard D. Hooker
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
North and South by John Jakes

So here's the deal. Shane and I are planning to take a little trip to Europe this summer after he graduates. We are thinking we want to go to Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and the Czech Republic. I was just thinking, maybe some of you seasoned travelers out there might have some advice, recommendations, and the such that you might like to share with us. We are all ears!

Every time I see the supervisor at work on Tuesday nights, I kind of giggle a little bit. She has the wackiest haircut. Every time I see her, I think of Edward Scissorhands. You know how Edward cuts Dianne Wiest's hair and then the whole neighborhood starts going to him for haircuts? She seriously has Dianne Wiest's haircut. And it's so bizarre. I don't know if you remember what it looked like, but it's all spiky and short on one half of her head, then like a bob on the other. It's really strange. And now Rosie O'Donnell has her hair cut like that too. Don't they know it's kind of weird looking? I can't imagine what brought her to choose that haircut out from the many options presented to her in the beauty salon's picture books. Maybe she just really likes Edward Scissorhands. I like her a lot...she's really nice and all, but the hair is just a little over the top for me.

I am coming to terms with the fact that I am ingesting entirely too much fiber. I must lay off the sticks.

We climbed to the top of Bishop's Peak yesterday. I was a little cranky due to lack of sleep, but it was a nice hike and I felt like I had accomplished something. As I took Shane to school this morning and glanced over at the mountain (is it a mountain?), I couldn't believe we had been to the top of it.

Home from work and lucky me, I get one night off. Today is apparently Martin Luther King Jr. Day Observed. This means Shane does not have school. So the question is, will we go hike Bishop's Peak today? or will we be too tired and have to catch up on all the homework that's due tomorrow and wasn't done over the weekend? What do you think?

January 16, 2003

me, my dad, and my brother Andrew, about this time, 24 years ago

Amy has come and gone, as has Shane's birthday. It was all pretty uneventful. He had school and work, then we went to dinner at Hudson's Grill, where Shane is always willing to try new things and I always stick to the same old chicken fajita sandwich. I found something good that I like. Is it wrong of me to stick with it? He seems to think so. We then came home and watched Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. I keep wondering if I would have thought differently of it had I seen it before Snatch. We own both of them now and I think if we watched it again, maybe with the subtitles to translate their cockney slang, it would make more sense and we might really like it. Not that it was hard to understand or anything, but we probably missed a lot of the jokes. Macy called to wish Shane a happy birthday in the middle of it, which was sweet of her. We are trying to get her to come up to visit us next month, but I am not sure her mom and dad will let her.

So here I am over at Movable Type. Aren't I shnazzy!

I have been working like crazy. I now have four days off, one of which is Shane's birthday. Yay for Shane!

My friend Amy Fuller, resident of Oakland, Oregon, is coming to visit tomorrow night. She and I met back in the summer of 1996 during our summer stay in Nueva Odesea, Mexico. We were the summer interns before there were summer interns and we had lot of wild and crazy times. Unfortunately, I have never been back, but she goes down there all the time. She is on her way to down there this time to stay for over a year. She is the queen of gabachas (foreigners) and she and Mexico should not be separated. It will be fun to see her and to here about all the stuff that has changed since I was there.

She is, courtesy of Shane, going to have a blog while she is down there. I will let you know when it is up and running because she always has crazy stories to tell. They always make you laugh and it's cool to hear about how life is in Mexico, as she interacts with the migrant workers and locals and all. Prepare yourself. It will be cool.

I had two interesting encounters with girls from High School while down in Vista. I think I have talked about these girls in the past. Girls I had met in the fourth grade. Girls that had pretended not to know me from then all the way through until graduation. Girls I would sit next to in Mr. Jones' English class that would act like they didn't know me. Who would return my welcoming smile with a glare. I don't know why they thought being friendly and civil to me was such a terrible idea. Anyway, I saw these two girls on two different occasions while we were down there. The first time, we were at Blockbuster with Ryan and Mandy. Shane and I were standing there, holding Macy. I made eye contact with one of them. I didn't say anything. The next thing I know, the other one is peeking around the corner of the isle, checking us out. We just kept doing our thing. We saw them again at Hometown Buffet. I am embarrassed to say we even went there, but that's where Mandy's parents wanted to eat. There was Katie, filling up her plate. It was crazy to run into them again. Yet again, I had Macy next to me. So, who knows what they think. Who cares. I wonder if they are still as stuck up as they were back then. It sucked te way the ignored me back in school, but I made it and have cool friends. I don't think I would have wanted to be friends with them anyway. It was weird, though, to see them eight years after we had graduated.

Shane is cutting up the Christmas tree. It was five years old.

I don't get the whole dirty-jeans-trend that is going around. You can pay more to buy a pair of jeans that look like they have been worn before. And not just worn once...worn many times and not washed so they have that dirty grimy appearance. A few months ago, Shane jumped on the band wagon and got a pair of the overpriced dirty jeans. I liked them. He looked very cute in them. He wore them, I washed them. All the dirt that we paid extra for was washed away. They are clean jeans now. I don't get it. I bought a pair myself last week when we were on vacation. They have been washed once and are already looking much cleaner. It doesn't make sense to me that they are selling these already dirty jeans, and charging more for them than for the still clean ones, and that all the dirt comes off in the first wash. What's the point? If they want to sell dirty jeans, at least get them dirty in something that will last and stain. Anyway, I was just happy to find a pair of jeans that fit. And that they were a size 6.

It's been a while and I am super sleepy right now, so I don't feel like typing much. I am longing for my bed. Ten days off. Ten nights of sleeping. In a dark room. With my lovie husband. Now it's back to real life. Four old people who think that hitting, scratching, and biting me is a good idea.

Our trip was sweet. It was a blast. Spent a lot of time with the Yingsts. Couldn't keep our hands off of this sweet little thing. Isn't she the cutest? The best part was watching Shane with her. He couldn't stay away from her. He endured a day of super-shopping without one word of complaining because Macy was there. He is going to be a very good daddy. I will write more about our trip down south when my brain is recharged.
