Ethan is asleep right now. In his crib. I caved in last night and decided we would try the pacifier. He was just so unhappy last night and could not be soothed. After several minutes of encouraging him to suck on his thumb (he does suck his thumb when he can find it), we decided why not just try the pacifier. Could it be any worse than encouraging him to be a thumb sucker? So, he is asleep. He has a hard time keeping the thing in his mouth, but when he gets the sucking rhythm going, he is content and falls asleep. I had originally wanted to skip the pacifier and I know we might just be creating another problem we will have to deal with later, but for now, it is good. We will deal with it later. I don't know what to do with myself. I have both hands free. I can eat my lunch like a normal person. I can sweep with both hands. I can type with both hands. He can sleep peacefully. In his crib. And he looks pretty cute with the little thing in his mouth.

I never have thought of pacifiers as a bad habbit. That’s pretty interesting. Actually that it’s called pascifier has just made sence to me. Amazing. It’s fun hearing these tales of nursing, gardening and slumber. Keep up the good work mom.

Maybe you should go rake the leaves, since you have so much free time.
And don’t worry…if he keeps using the pacifier when he gets older, he can always just become a raver or something.

I was soooo soooo anti-pacifier with Grant. We never even bought one to try. I wanted the baby to be able to “soothe himself”. He’s nearly five and still sucks his thumb! Frustrated by the fact that I can’t take a thumb away and I could take a pacifier away, I tried the pacifier with Dean. After three months of trying to convince him how wonderful pacifiers are, he adopted thumb sucking and he is worse about it than Grant! I am starting to believe that neither are “evil” and that a child will figure it out. I’m still trying the pacifier with Lael in hopes that she won’t suck her thumb, but she isn’t in love with it and we don’t use it at night. We’ll see if her brothers’ peer pressure is too much for her. Trust your instincts- I’m sure you are doing very well at this mommy thing. I wish I could see him.

He doesn’t need the pacifier at night, so that’s good. I am not too worried about it. I am just thankful that he is sleeping laying down and I am not having to hold him all day. Not that I mind holding him, but I have to get some stuff done.
Matt…we have decided to save the leaf-raking for you so you have something to do when you come down to visit.

Congrats on the baby. He is cute, I saw pics on Shane’s blog. As for the pascifier…the only thing you really have to worry about is the type. One of those big straight ones can mess up the formation of his palate. I suggest on of the orthodontic ones that look sort of like a nipple. They are about $1.50 at Target. Isn’t parenthood great?!!! P.S. Lily was born Dec 9, and is happy and healthy.

Yay! I love seeing the new photos of Ethan. So handsome. And, of course, I just stay amazed about all the hair he has. Especially now that my little girl is soooo bald on top. :-(
I keep wondering how you are both settling into the routine of parenthood. Can’t wait to catch up with you once I have a moment to phone!
