My grandparents lived in San Diego when we were growing up, about one hour away from us. Every now and then, one of us would get to go and stay with them for a few days. It was always very exciting and my grandma would always have big plans and lots of treats. It always seemed like we got to stay up so late when we were visitng (they would be heading for bed around 9:00, but it seemed so late then!). My grandma would make dinner and my grandpa would sit in his chair with his tray of food on his lap while my grandma and I sat on the couch and ate (she always bought artichokes. I loved artichokes). My grandpa would watch reruns of MASH and Cheers while we sat there and my grandma and I were not allowed to make a peep while they were on. After we ate, we would make some kind of craft or she would crochet while we sat there. I can remember him getting so frustrated with our whispering. We were interrupting his shows! They were reruns and to an eight year old, totally lame shows. I didn’t get them at all. They weren’t funny and I didn’t get half of what they were talking about. Even though I had to sit through an hour of painful television, I still loved being able to go visit them and now I can appreciate my grandpa’s love for Cheers and MASH. A bit before bed, my grandma would make tea for my grandpa and me and she would drink her cup of hot water (caffeine didn’t agree with her, I guess). Around 9 o’clock, they would get up and go to bed, leaving me to sleep in the living room on the couch. My grandma would turn the cuckoo clock of so it didn’t scare me in the night (I was scared by everything) and I would fall asleep. My grandma would be up by 4 the next morning, making something for breakfast or baking or doing some crazy craft for such an ungodly hour. They are fun memories and I miss those times. I have been thinking a lot about my grandma lately and how much I miss her. I am so thankful to have such great memories of times I spent with her. She was a great lady and I was able to learn a lot from her. Everyone should be so blessed to have such a great grandma.

So sweet. It isn’t until you are older that you appreciate certain things about parents and grandparents. As of late, I can’t stop thinking about my grandmother and all of the many things that I want to learn from her now that I’m an adult.

I think it is so cool that you have such a great relationship with your grandma despite the distance there is between where you live. It makes me realize that while it is nice to have loved ones close by, it is not necessary in order to have a close, loving relationship.

No. But it sure is easier. I’ve missed out on so much, and I get slightly jealous (if I’m being honest) of people who have grown up around family. I guess distance doesn’t ensure a fabulous relationship (there are plenty of people who can’t stand their relatives that live down the street from them), but if you have a good one, it makes it so much sweeter. I mean, I’ve taken up knitting like crazy, but haven’t seen grandma since I started all this last year. She loves hearing about it over the phone and getting pictures of my designs and finished pieces- I just long to sit with her in her living room and chat and knit and drink tea. Hopefully soon.

That cookoo clock was kinda freaky. Sleeping in that living room has it’s own special feeling to it. I like the long carpet that is in there. It’s easy to fall asleep on. Also, the drawer with all the good stuff in it was pretty sweet. I can always go for a round with the etch-a-sketch.

I love the new design! So pretty! I went to Mark’s and shared what you had written and he remembered the same thing except he had to sit through Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! Times change I guess.

I was such a scaredy cat anyway. The cuckoo clock freaked me out.
I forgot about that drawer. It did have all kinds of cool stuff in it. I think the etch-a-sketch was especiialy cool to us because we never had one at home.
That orange shag carpet is still very very soft and comfy. I think it will be there till the end of time. They sure don’t make carpet like they used to….

Totally. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a stain on it.
