I joined the women’s book club at our church this last month. Actually, this is the first month it has existed. I am not really sure I will be able to attend the meet ups where the books are discussed, but I love to read and thought it would be cool to read books others select/recommend and possibly get to hear what they thought about them.
We selected Reading Lolita in Tehran for our first book. It is a tough book. It is getting easier to read as time goes by, but it is not light reading. I am really enjoying it and I cannot stop thinking about Iran. I can’t believe some of the things I am reading that go on there. The book discusses much about the authors life in Iran from the late 70s as Ayatollah Khomeini came to power and the Islamic Revolution. I am so interested in finding out more about what exactly did happen at that time and I am wishing I had paid more attention in my High School World History class. I vaguely remember Iran being an issue back then, but little more than that before reading this book. It is very interesting and it is so insane to read about the injustices that the people of Iran have suffered under their government. I am enjoying the book very much and I am a little disappointed I will miss the discussion.
Reading this book has made me realize how much I shelter myself from the world. I pay very little attention to things going on locally in my community, let alone in other countries. We don’t get the paper, we don’t watch the news. I am planning on starting to do either, but there is a lot of stuff going on out there and I should probably start paying a little more attention. I don’t want to sound like I am totally clueless or don’t care, because I do have a little bit of a clue and I really do care. I just think that I should start to care more.

I would love to do a book club, and a friend of mine has mentioned one she started, but I honestly can’t figure out where I would fit it in. I take that back, I don’t want to give up certain things to have that reading time. I feel thankful to get an hour in the morning to read my Bible and pray…I like hanging out with Eric in the evenings…I like to knit while we watch TV or movies…and we like going to bed at the same time (I wouldn’t want to stay up past Eric to read late into the night). So, I kind of stick to reading while I work out. It’s taking me forever to read the book I’m reading right now. :-(
If I could knit and read at the same time….hmmm…maybe I should try that.

I have been interested in a book club myself, but fear that once I am assigned a book to read, that I won’t want to read it anymore. I have a problem with things like that. As soon as I “have” to do it. I don’t like it anymore. Hmm….maybe I need counseling or something….

You should try a subscription to Newsweek. It’s hard core cause you get a new one every week (hence the name), but it does a great job of keeping you informed. It’s also super cheap.

That’s a great idea. It’s much better than a newspaper because your fingers don’t get dirty!!

We got Time magazine once for a while and I really liked it and actually did read it. I don’t know if I would find the time to now. I am excited to be in this book club, the only thing is, I only have time to read the book we are reading so far and the other books I want to read are falling by the wayside. Sounds like I am way ahead of everyone else, though. I have been trying to find someone to talk about the book with and everyone is like, in the first chapter still.
