Yesterday was a big day for me. I got myself a library card.
It started with my need to have Life of Pi in my possession for this month’s book reading. I looked at Costco. I looked at Target. I looked at Walmart. Couldn’t find it. I looked at a used book store. I didn’t want to pay full price at the bookstore for it (although at that point, it would have been worth it for the time I had put into searching for it). I didn’t want to wait for it from amazon (plus I would have ended up spending a lot more to get free shipping). I also wasn’t 100% sold on the book. Do I really even want to read it? So. The library. They are very high tech these days. You can renew online! How great is that? We got a lot of books for Ethan, which excited me (and kind of grossed Shane out). I looked for my book and couldn’t find it. Ethan started loosing his cool, so we were about to leave. As I checked out, the ever-helpful librarian offered to get the only copy they had in stock at the time for me. The large print edition. I thought, why not? It will make me feel like I am reading it really fast. So, I am reading the large print version of Life of Pi and I am already over 100 pages into it, thanks to the large print.
I liked the library and I think they have a lot to offer for kids, so I am excited to go back (maybe by myself) to investigate a little further what they have there. I can remember summers growing up and being a part of the library read-a-thon. I flew through those books. I couldnt’ get the books fast enough. I am really encouraging reading with Ethan and he loves books at this point. I hope our love for reading is past on to him. Maybe he will get to take part in the read-a-thon some day.

Shane was grossed out because he doesn’t want to think where the books have been…and whose mouths they have been in (baby books). I figure everything we touch has been somewhere and we’ll survive.

Nana and Ethan have been to the library twice now. He cries when it’s time to leave, but then I give him one of the “gross books” he has picked out to read and he’s fine. He really liked “toddlers’ day”. There were so many other new readers there. It’s on Wednesday mornings. I heard “Pi” was really good. I want to read it to. I just finished “The Kite Runner”. It was one of the best books ever.

He wanted to get out of his stroller while we were there and I wouldn’t let him, so he was being a little loud, I don’t think I could look at books and keep him close, though.
Pi is good and an easy read (esp with the large print!). Can I borrow The Kite Runner? I want to read it…maybe next. I am going to be finished with Pi way before the next book club meeting.

Okay, I understand the grossed out thing now :). When I was little I loved the library! It was so fun to get to pick out my very own books with my very own card! We went regularly, and I will remember it forever. I know that Ethan will never forget these special moments with you.

I loved it, too. I think a lot of kids will miss out on it nowadays, though. I am glad I rediscovered it. I am already thinking of next books to checkout. And I have decided that I may buy some of the ones I checked out for Ethan in the future because he likes them so much.

That was one of our constant activities during the summer. You kids had your picture in the North County Times when we were at Story Time. I think that Andrew still has his first card, signed when he was in Kindergarten! That’s where we discovered Dragon Franz, and Sir Cederic, two of David and My favorites! And Erika, can you remember us tapeing you reading the Library books, It Looked Like Spilt Milk and the naughty kid, Boris Bad Enough!? Remember? He kicked the shrink!

I am so all about the library. That’s one of the big things I miss living in Mexico. I’ve probably bought more books since moving here than in the rest of my life combined.

Mom, do you remember the two series I read when I was a little bit older- the one about the little witch whose aunts were witches and there were several books about her? The other one was about kids…they were written maybe in the 50s? I can’t remember what they were called. I was wondering if they still existed. Especially the little witch ones. I really liked them.
(I can’t believe you let me read books about a little witch…)
