I just lit the oven on fire. I had to throw baking soda all over a brown sugar buttery mess that leaked all over the bottom of the oven. I have serious oven cleaning to do and the thought of just buying a new oven did cross my mind. I was going to make these tasty little treats for a baby shower I am going to. And they are tasty! I am going to post the recipe so you guys can try it if you like. I just have one recommendation: use a cookie sheet that has edges. I don’t know what I was thinking….

Saltine Toffee Cookies Servings: 35

Ingredients: 4 ounces saltine crackers 1 cup butter 1 cup dark brown sugar 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 3/4 cup chopped pecans

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). 2. Line cookie sheet with saltine crackers in single layer. 3. In a saucepan combine the sugar and the butter. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes. Immediately pour over saltines and spread t cover crackers completely. 4. Bake at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) for 5 to 6 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the top. Let sit for 5 minutes. Spread melted chocolate and top with chopped nuts. Cool completely and break into pieces.

They are delicious. I was going to make them minus the nuts. Oh well. If you make some, save me a few since I don’t know when I will give it a try again…gotta get the oven back in running order first.

ohhh yum! you made them! they are soooo good:) Did i ever mention I made Amy Karol’s lemon squares she posted about last week? They were amazing and the easiest dessert I’ve ever made.

Oooooh. I’ve had those (or something similar) but have never tried to make them. I detest making desserts that are harder than cookies or have too many steps, but for some reason don’t mind very complex bread recipes or multi-step entrees. Weird. So, I probably won’t make these but will absolutely consume them. When are you coming over with a fresh batch?!!! :-)

Sorry about the oven! The desserts sound great though and I am going to give them a try. I hope that you find something magical to help clean the oven!! Maybe Andrew’s gnome? I need to know who this Amy Karol is…how do I get to her lemon bars?

Amy Karol is Angry chicken over to the right. I did see those lemon bars and they looked yummy, but didn’t try them. I will have to!

It ended up not being too bad…everything kind of just came off. The baking powder I threw in was more of the problem. I just need to do a little more work when Ethan the gnome isn’t around:

Oh, and I didn’t really make them because I ended up throwing the whole pan into the sink to deal with the fire. I think I could have saved them…the actual ones on the pan were fine but I was too busy dealing with a fire to notice. Bummer.

We make these at the Schertz house… but we call them Crunch Bars. Deb (my mother) calls them Faux Rocha… oh Deb!

Another thing that I found useful. I line my baking sheet (the one with edges) with tin foil… really saves on clean-up. But then again… I wait until my mom visits before I clean my sink. Yep… once every two months. There … I said it, and with no shame.
