Shane and I are having a little debate and I am hoping that those of you who read this can help me out a bit.

Would you please comment and tell me how often you clean the kitchen sink? And then also tell me how often you think you should clean it.

I am embarrassed to tell you how often I do it, but I think I should do it everyday. Maybe I won’t be so embarrassed to tell you after I see what you think. But, he thinks I do it too often and I don’t think I do it often enough.

Kitchen sink cleaning is never a separate chore for me. I have a scrubber brush (the OXO one with the detergent that goes in the handle from Target) and it is ALWAYS in the sink. I load dishes into the dishwasher as the day progresses, run it once a day, and anything after that is handwashed. So, when I do the handwashing and fill that basin, the sink gets clean, when I drain the water out, I swish the scrubber brush and call it done. Every day or two, I take the dishrag and wipe the faucet and backsplash area. Now, a week could go by before I scrub the drain/ dry side because all that happens on that side is dishes air drying… no dirt, no disposing. There’s my long-winded answer. Now I have to wonder if what I do is “normal”. :-)

I know this is a little bit different, but my 3 roommates and I each have days. We are all responsible for 2 days, which includes emptying the dishwasher, loading it, cleaning the sink and counters and stove, and taking out the trash and recyclables. So basically, it is done every day, making it ready for the next person’s day. I think that is actually the one chore we keep up with really consistently because the kitchen can just get disgusting SO fast! I think daily is not weird at all.

Like Tisra, I keep a scruber in the sink so everytime I load something in the dishwasher, the sink gets wiped out, usually a couple times a day. But I usually scrub it out with soft scrub every other day because the sink is white and I hate stains.

P.S. Did you see that one Oprah show a while back(it was on “how often do you clean this or that?”) that said your kitchen sink can be more dirty and carry more germs than your toilet? Crazy! But if you think about it, it’s probably true. I’ve used soft scrub w/bleach ever since I heard that.

It used to be every 2 days. Now I’m so busy that sometimes it’s a week! Luckily the semester will be over soon!

Since I load the dishwasher at least once a day, and I usually scrub and wash the sink out like the other ladies that have commented. I love my Scour Off that is a natural paste and really gets any stains out. I use that about every 2 weeks. I would like to do it every week, but you know how time gets away from us. A few weeks ago I experimented with Shaklee’s Nature Bright Stain Remover for stains on clothing (A natural version of OxiClean). It does and excellent job with getting out coffee and tea stains in mugs, so I tried it on the sink. I put a small amount of water in the sink, sprinkled about 1 Tbsp. of Nature Bright in the sink and let it sit overnight. It made the sink really white. I hope to do this maybe once a month.
Another thing I do to disinfect is taking my mixture of 1/2 tsp. of Basic G with 16 oz of water in a spray bottle. I spray the counters and sink and let it sit for 5 to 10 mins. and then wipe it clean with a damp rag. Basic G is more effective than bleach without the harsh fumes. I try to do this every couple days. Basic G is know to keep fighting up to 3 days. Hope this helps.

Umm…daily we empty the strainer junk and spray it out but the “comet/bleach product” thing: probably every 2-3 weeks. Yep. No one here has died or been ill. We’re actually pretty happy but I think we could clean it more frequently. Well, Erika, however often you actually do it, you can’t be embarrassed now!

So…really questions on cleaning?? This is not a good topic for me. The sink? Well since I am at the kitchen sink so many times during the day it gets rinsed and washed with normal dish soap a few time a day but…..I have a feeling you are looking for the actually cleaning. Maybe…once or twice a week I pull out the soft scrub and really give the sink a scrub. After reading the post about Oprah I am a little embarrassed but I am just trying to be honest. I can not wait to hear what the discussion is about. I am just guessing here but…you do it like 4 times a day, right?

I clean the sink three or four times a day! Sometimes I use a little jet fuel and just throw a match at it. That really kills the little germs. Oh and never put a utensil in there then decide you need it again and reuse it unless you just did the JET FUEL thing!

I found a kitchen gnome to do ours. I guess he’s been slacking latley. “Comet! Get in there!”
