So I killed our vacuum. Or it died, I guess. I was vacuuming and it started making this low pitch sound and became very stinky. I am scared to turn it on again. It is old and wasn’t very well taken care of…it requires maintenance and I just didn’t ever do it. I think I replaced the filter once in the 9 years or so we have had it.

I am trying to figure out what to get as a replacement. I am thinking I want a Dyson and all the reviews I read are good, but it is pricey. It doesn’t seem like it needs to much maintenance and just sounds like it does a great job. If you have any input one way or another, I would appreciate it! Anyone have any Dyson experience? Or other vacuum types?

Whining, smoking, Sometimes it’s as simple as the belt being changed. Replacement Belt- $4.95 New Filters - $3.45 Not having to charge a new vacumm to mastercard- priceless

I think it is more than that…something with the motor. The belt looks a-ok. It is like it is struggling to power the thing. Something else is amiss.

And although a lot less than the price of a new vacuum, the filters are $30.00 and there are a couple of them.

You might try and find a vacuum repair shop. Most of the time, they will perform a diagnostic for free before they fix anything. It could be something relatively easy and inexpensive to fix. We ended up buying a hoover “Nano Lite” for $49.99 at Walmart and it’s the best vacuum I’ve ever owned.

We love Orecks. They are small and lightweight but powerful and last forever. But also a little pricey.

We have the Hoover Elite from costco.
It works really well and when it breaks you can take it back and get a new one for free.

I agree with Pam on the Vacuum Shop idea. Sew Pro can do a check for you (right by Trader Joes) - and it would be worth it so at least know what the problem is. Costco sells Dysons - and I think they are a pretty good deal. I read about it in the Costco Connection business owners magazine. I know they are pricey but I think they are worth every penny. The only thing I don’t like about them is that they are bagless. Seems to me when you dump out the dirt canister you just reintroduce all the dirt and dust you just cleaned up, back into the air.

I bought a Kenmore canister vacuum (not an upright) for about $400 and it works great. While I have not regretted my purchase I kind of wish I had saved up a couple hundred more and bought a Miele. I think those are even better than Dysons. On the whole, I think you pretty much get what you pay for. If you get cheapy ones and need to replace them every few years, you might as well just buy a more expensive vacuum and have it for years and years. Just a thought:)

Check out Consumer Reports FIRST! Dyson’s aren’t all their hyped up to be from what I remember last time I checked.
